Lastly we reached the Winter Palace home to Nicholas the II and many of his predecessors. Bloody Sunday took place in the palace square in 1905 and marked the collapse of support for the Romanov regime. Later, in 1917, the site saw the storming of the Winter Palace and the seizure of power by the Bolsheviks. A truly beautiful and breathtaking building - it felt like a step back in time as we all reflected on its historical past and the events which took place under its shadow.
