Dr Sean Lang
Many thanks to Dr Sean Lang who visited the school on Thursday and gave two great talks to our Sixth Form Historians!
He addressed "why parliamentary reform mattered?" in relation to C19th radicalism and reform, before going on to talk about "were the British an imperial people?".
Both talks offered a fascinating insight into crucial and controversial topics!

Departure Lounge
We are currently going through passport control at St Petersburg airport hoping to board the plane soon.
Palaces and Snowball fights!
Our last visit of our trip was a walk around St Catherine's park to see the summer residence of the early Romanovs. After observing the palace, we got carried away in the snow and had a massive snow ball fight where both Mr Dickens and Miss Mcdougall ended up face first in the snow after a fight with Billy - it was hilarious!
Alexander Palace
Next we headed to Tsar Nicholas' summer palace, The Tsar and his family had many happy memories at this place which they preferred to the Winter Palace in the centre of the city. After his abdication, this is where the Nicholas lived under house arrest before he and his family were assassinated by the Bolsheviks. Rasputin was also initially buried here although his remains were later removed.
Peter and Paul Cathedral
Within the Peter and Paul Fortress we visited its cathedral, here the Romonov family are buried along with other previous emperors like Peter the Great - the founder of the city.
Peter and Paul Fortress
This morning we visited the Peter and Paul fortress which used to serve as a prison for political criminals. Political figures like Gorky and later the Provisional Government were imprisoned here, Ben got to grips with prison life and tried out the beds.

Last night!
Next we headed back off to the hotel to spend our last night together on the dance floor showing off some more of our moves!
Dinner at the Nikholaevevsky Palace
Afterwards we enjoyed a delicious four course meal in the restaurant at the theatre. Miss Mcdougall seemed to have had a bit too much champagne to be in the photo.
Folk Show
This evening we went to see a Russian folk show, the dancers and singers were amazing and they really showed off Russian culture. Brennan found a new girlfriend on stage, after being asked to dance by one of the dancers. Laura also had a not so secret admirer!
Hermitage
Next we visited the Hermitage Museum within the Winter Palace. The Museum is so huge that it would actually take 15 years to look round all exhibits; of course we can't spend that long, so we were able to look round the most impressive parts, including the coronation room, the Tsars family dinning room, the meeting places of the provisional government and lastly some famous art work from Rembrandt Leonardo da Vinci and Monet.
